Really Right Stuff BH-30 Pro II Overview

The BH-30 Pro II Ball Head from Really Right Stuff is a 2.9″ tall, aluminum support with a load capacity of 15 lb. The head’s main locking lever controls the movement of the ball; at the same time, the 12.1 oz head has a cut notch on the side that allows you to position the camera at a 90 angle. The independent panning lock disengages, so you can rotate the head a full 360 and mount cameras weighing up to 15 lb with its Arca-type quick release system. Scales are laser engraved at the base and at the top of the clamp for repeated setups, and the head mounts to a tripod via its 3/8″-16 threaded socket.

Replacing a Gitzo that came with my traveler that had too many control and wasn’t intuitive like this solid unit. Doesn’t fold into the legs as compactly. Four stars for dear price. Made in US

Works perfectly

I bought this small head for a travel tripod (GT1545T), and for that it works very well. I mostly use medium and large format film cameras with pan-tilt heads, but for something light weight and compact I decided to try this. I have to say that this RRS small ball head works much, much better than another small ball head that came on a different travel tripod that I have.

Great Ball Head in a Smaller Size

My main ball head is the BH-55 on the 34-L and a very solid setup for my camera bodies with the RRS L-Plates. I needed a smaller combination and this BH-30 works fine with L-Plates and is rated to handle everything, but my larger lenses. Until RRS catches up on their tripod inventory, I’m using a Manfrotto tripod and the head is a nice size for monopod work too.

I was a little hesitant about spending that kind of money on a ball-head due to lower quality units not being able to lock tight without a little drop. NO worries with this unit! Even with my 200-500 Zoom (which is a beast!) it locks firm and tight. I almost went with the BH-40 but I was trying to keep things as light as possible for normal use. I had a wild idea about mounting my Gimbal (which is on an Acra Swiss plate to the ball with my 200-500 for the few times I really needed the Gimbal and the extra height and it works without a problem! Perfect! Since I purchased the best tripod on the market, I figured I should put the best ball head on it. 2 day delivery on the whole setup…can’t beat that!!!
