By Photo’s Matt Cottom Close-Focusing Wide-Angle Prime Designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens is a close-focusing wide-angle prime ideally suited for landscapes, cityscapes, and close-up scenes. Featuring a unique half-macro design, this lens offers a minimum focusing distance of just 3.7″, making it an excellent choice for photographing and filming everything from close-ups of plants and small details to street scenes and vistas. Optimized for video as well as stills, the lens provides smooth and near silent autofocus performance to complement movie recording applications, and the lens is also compatible with micro-step aperture control, which enables smooth exposure changes while recording video.
Sophisticated Optical Design
- Boasting an outstanding optical design, this lens is comprised of twelve elements in nine groups, which include two aspherical elements to maintain a compact form factor and reduce spherical aberrations and distortions.
- Two extra-low dispersion elements and one ultra-high refractive index element work to minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased color fidelity, edge-to-edge sharpness, and high resolving performance.
Versatile Focusing Performance
- Smooth and near silent autofocus performance complements movie recording applications while the quick operation is beneficial to still photographers.
- Excellent video performance with a mechanical design that suppresses focus breathing. Also compatible with micro-step aperture control, which enables smooth exposure changes while recording video.
All-Purpose Functionality
- Lightweight and rugged wide-angle prime specifically designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless digital cameras, where it provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm.
- Bright f/1.7 maximum aperture well-suited to working in difficult and low lighting conditions, also affords greater control over depth of field for selective focus techniques.
- Half-macro design benefits working with close-up subjects and provides a minimum focusing distance of just 3.7″.
- A rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when making shallow depth of field imagery.
- Dust, splash, and freeze-resistant design protects the lens during heavy field use and harsh conditions.

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 Reviews
Liked it, wanted to love it

Very nice lens – great to have something this wide with both fast aperture and AF. Unfortunately, it was up against the chipped Laowa 7.5 f/2, and it lost out because of a couple factors: obviously, the Laowa is wider, but I could overlook that if the PanaLeica 9mm’s performance on my OM-1 was stellar; unfortunately, the 9mm exhibited pretty distinct purple flare in interior shots with a bright window off-center in the frame. This wasn’t as dramatic as the infamous Panasonic 7-14 f/4 purple blobs issue on Olympus bodies, but it was still enough, when coupled with it being not quite as wide as I’d like, for it to lose out to the remarkable Laowa for my use.
Sharp and clear

Super light lens, it’s very sharp even at F1.7, little distortion. Recommends as a complement with other lenses, such as a 25mm and 50mm,
Quite sharp at wide open

Bought this for shooting northern lights to compensate M43’s smaller sensor size. Fortunately it arrived before my trip and it’s plenty sharp for the purpose. Stars close to the edges see some minor distortion but in the end if you don’t zoom in to pixel level they are negligible and I think this is exceptionally good for wide open. If you want to shoot northern lights with M43 I think this is the best choice. You could use laowa 7.5mm but this one is even cheaper (albeit this is 9mm) and with autofocus and weather sealing.
Impresionante lente

I’m very pleased with this lens. Super light and compact. Sharp even at the edges when wide open. Definitely worth every penny.

Lens is compact and light, but with a great build quality and punchy colors. A welcome addition.
Amazing lens!

Excellent sharp images with no distortion despite being an 18mm full frame equivalent. Small, light and well built. Looks amazing on my Pen F. This is a must have for micro 4/3.

Outstanding performance, light weight you can tell the Leica look from the clear micro contrast and colors The images distortion are well controlled, I did not see any lens flare or ghosting and the CA is very well controlled
