Viltrox 35mm f/1.8 Overview
Compact and comfortable, the 35mm f/1.8 Lens from Viltrox is a wide-angle prime lens designed for full-frame-format Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. The versatile wide field of view is suitable for a broad range of subjects from portraiture to reportage, and the fast f/1.8 design excels in low-light conditions and for shallow depth of field applications. The optical design incorporates extra-low dispersion and high refractive index elements to suppress a variety of aberrations and distortion, and an HD Nano multi-layer coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for greater contrast in bright and backlit conditions.
Complementing the optics, the lens’s design also incorporates an STM stepping motor that affords fast, near silent, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design also contributes to quick performance. Additionally, the lens features an integrated micro-USB port for making future firmware updates to the lens.
Prime wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame-format Nikon Z mirrorless cameras, and when used with APS-C format cameras, it has the equivalent perspective of a 52.5mm lens. Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field. Two extra-low dispersion elements and two high transparency elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity and color accuracy. 10 elements in eight groups. Two aspheric elements help to control spherical aberrations and reduce distortion in order to realize high sharpness and accurate rendering. HD nano multi-layer coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. STM stepping motor enables quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. The internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during use for improved handling and quicker response. Integrated manual aperture ring for tactile exposure control; this ring also features an ‘A’ position for automated, camera-based aperture selection. Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality. Integrated micro-USB port for firmware updates. UPC: 778469116432

EXCELLENT LENS

Interfaces with Nikon Z cameras well. F stop of 1.8 makes it a little bulky and heavy, but takes great sharp fotos.
Great affordable 35 with AFq

Picked this up the moment I saw it was available. I don’t have much experience with 35mm focal length on full frame, but have wanted one as I get more in to video work. Still, being uncertain about how much use I’ll get out of the lens made the $850 price tag of Nikon’s Z Mount 35mm a tough sell. That makes this a great lens for me, at a price point I was willing to jump on right away. Sharpness is great. Like the Viltrox 24mm, the lens does have some distortion in the corners. More than I would expect for a 35, but it didn’t bother me in any photos I have taken in a few days of normal use. Only when I set up a photo specifically to check for distortion do I notice it. Autofocus is fantastic, faster than adapted F Mount lenses and totally silent, so great for video. Focus breathing is well corrected. Other than the distortion, the biggest drawback is the minimum focus distance. 40cm, over a foot away from the sensor. It repeatedly caught me off guard when testing the camera for sharpness, only to realize the image was soft because I was a few inches too close. For the most part it’s not an issue in real world use for me, so the lens remains a great choice for my situation, but that would be the biggest trade-off to consider when looking at this lens vs. the native Nikkor 35mm Z. For half the price of Nikon’s lens, this a great option to have, and I’m thrilled to see third party AF lenses coming to the Z Mount.

Great lens for the price

I’ve had this lens for the price. Nice bokeh. Not much difference between it and the Nikon for half the price.
