Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Overview

Sigma Introduces a Compact Contemporary 28-70mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens for Mirrorless Cameras

SIGMA 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens | Hands-on Review

The 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L-Mount from Sigma is a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom characterized by its f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. The design suits working in available lighting conditions while affording increased control over depth of field. More lightweight and compact than similar 24-70mm lenses, it’s optical design incorporates two FLD and two SLD low-dispersion elements plus three aspherical elements that reduce a variety of aberrations to achieve high sharpness, enhanced clarity, and improved color accuracy. It features just one lightweight focusing element, which keeps the AF unit small. This, along with a quiet and fast stepping motor, makes for responsive and near-silent autofocus performance, an ideal combination for filmmakers looking for a high-performance, lightweight, and easy-to-handle camera system that works well with a gimbal or other accessories.

Each optical surface features Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous coatings to improve contrast and color rendering by suppressing lens flare and ghosting for optimal light transmission, and an added water- and oil-repellent coating on the front optic helps keep the lens free from smudges and droplets. The weather-sealed design benefits working in trying environmental conditions, and a nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes a pleasing bokeh quality when using wider apertures.

  • Standard zoom for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras
  • 42-105mm equivalent focal length when used on an APS-C camera
  • Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for Low light use and depth-of-field control
  • Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) and two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing
  • Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion
  • Both Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous coatings minimize lens flare and ghosting and produce contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery
  • Integrated stepping motor and optimized AF algorithm provides quick and quiet autofocus
  • 28mm minimum focus distance: 7.5″, 1:3.3 magnification
  • 70mm minimum focus distance: 15″, 1:4.6 magnification
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm for a pleasing bokeh quality
  • Brass bayonet for mounting accuracy and rigidity
  • Rubber sealing for dust- and splash-resistance

Sharp and surprisingly good quality pictures!

    Great, affordable lens

A must for any run-and-gun shooter. Great for interviews as well. Videos are sharp and the build quality on the lens itself is excellent.

    Incredible

I’ve used a couple kit lenses and a few primes in my video work, but with the fast nature of my type of videography having a decent zoom range and fast aperture really speeds me up. I think this is a great next step in your lens purchases if you’re coming up from a kit lens.

    Amazing multi-purpose lens!

My main activity is wedding photography, and I have to say, I only used one lens (this one) with a a7c during all wedding. Razor sharp images, light, and compact compared against similar lenses and really worth the money!

    My New Everyday Lens

By Clyde Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2021-11-01

This lens is fantastic. It’s now to daily go to lens. I leave on my camera so I can just pick up and go. I highly recommend it to everyone.

    Super value!

By Michael Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2021-09-14

Nicely built, good looking and tack sharp. All for a very reasonable price, plus it’s pretty fast so you can get nice bokeh effects if that’s what you’re after.

Vignette was not acceptable to me

By Mikhail Rated 2 out of 5 Date: 2022-01-11

In my experience, the vignetting was too much (both on a short and long edge) which only resolves around f/4.5. Sony vignette autocorrection (shading compensation) didn’t help at all. It was a dealbreaker to me.

Sharp, Compact perfect for Hybrid shooters!

By NEWYORK Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2021-12-10

I bought this lens before selling my 24-70 GM . It’s either I’m returning this or sell my GM . These are the reason why I kept this lens . Its sharper than GM and has better contrast , compact size that’s half the weight of GM makes a difference carrying it all day. It’s also perfect for Gimbal and I already have a Tamron 17-28 that can fill up the 24mm Edge of GM. Overall I’m very happy with this Lens except the pin cushion distortion which is fixable in LR .
