The L-Plate Set for Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III from Really Right Stuff is a modular design composed of an Arca-type compatible base plate and L-component that facilitate easier, more stable switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations when mounting to the top of a tripod head. The CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum L-plate set maintains access to the camera’s side ports and battery door. While the camera’s low-profile articulating screen doesn’t allow for a contoured edge toward the back of the camera, the L-Plate’s dual position design allows you to choose between port access or screen articulation by quickly changing positions with the included hex key.

The L-plate set has been type II black anodized, which makes it resistant to scuffs and scratches, and each axis is laser engraved with center marks on the back to align it on a tripod head. On the inside of the bottom plate, an anti-twist pin is utilized to prevent any movement between the camera and the plate, and on the bottom of the same plate, a QD socket is supplied for a shoulder strap that uses the QD Strap System.

Initial Impressions

I received the set today, and tried it in various configurations with my camera and lenses. Pros: The hardware is very substantial and light. It will definitely distribute any torque from tripod use or from a lens strap more evenly across the bottom of the camera, preventing tripod mount tears such as have occurred occasionally with the EM5 III. The extra grip at the bottom of the camera allows you to hold it will all 5 fingers, good for carrying the camera with heavier lenses. Cons: The L-mount will always block something when it is installed. In the forward position, you can put the monitor in more positions, but not in every possible position, such as a typical position when holding the camera overhead or low to the ground. The L-mount can be moved back and forth, or removed, but it takes a bit of effort to do so with its very snug fit, especially with the tiny Allen wrench provided. A more substantial Allen wrench makes the job easier, and is easy to acquire. Although the extra grip extension makes carrying the camera with one hand easier, it doesn’t provide sufficient support that would make one-handed operation of the camera so easy. In fact, I was getting more shooting support without any added grip, by supporting the underside of the camera with my pinky finger. However, I normally shoot with 2 hands, so this is not a showstopper. It seems that I’ll need to pre-determine what type of photography I’m going to be doing on any given excursion, which will determine whether to include the L-mount with the grip for vertical tripod use, the grip by itself for horizontal tripod use or carrying heavier lenses, or no added grip at all for an optimal light carry. Changing on the fly, while in the field, is doable but somewhat time-consuming. These are minor inconveniences, however. Overall, I’m happy with my purchase, which adds substantially to the versatility of the camera.

Just got this RRS L-Plate. It does not snug up against the body of my new E-M5 Mark III. It rattles, needing about a 1/32 spacer or a shorter screw to tighten down and be useful.
